Hand Filature.—
When we referred the other day to the issue of some very pretty Bank notes by the Imperial Teatlees - Black Lion 81. Bank of China, we only mentioned the engra- vers and printers, Messrs. Barclay and Fry, London. Due credit ought, however, to be given to the designer. These notes in all their details, both English and Chinese, were designed by Mr. B. A. de Villard, who also made drawings of the watermark and network, and supplied the prin- Taysaam.-Green Kabing M ters with hand-water colour paintings, to give them the exact elour wanted. The small Chinese characters on the notes
were written by H.E. Sheng's own hand, and the e
engravers and printers had there- fore only to copy what was completely put before them, which they did correctly and well. The dollar notes issued in Shanghai are of s pink colour on lemon coloured paper, and are of five denominations-each of different size: 81, Yellow Silk.-S'tang Skeins Gold Elephant. 5, 10, 50, 100; while the Tael notes issued here are of the same values and sizes, but of reddish violet colour; and the $ notes to be issued in Canton are of silk green colour. It may also not be known that the present pretty issue of the Imperial Chinese postage stamps, engraved by Messrs. Waterlow and Sons, are as to colour and design exact copies of Mr. de Vil- lard's designs, as were also the lithographed Shanghai stamps of the Customs Post issued on the day of the Empress-Dowager's birthday.-Mercury.
