MISCELLANEOUS.

The naval regatta of the British fleet took place at Hakolats on the 2nd Jeptember. The Adairal's Jup was won by the whaler of the Alacrity.

At Shanghai, about half-past seven on the morning of the 6th September, the Hwashing Cotton Muil, Yangtzapɔo, was found to be on fire, but tas outbreak was.promptly extinguished by the employés batore much damage was dons; and a few dollars will cover all losses, from Hakodate under dats of the 31st of August, to the effact that the trial of the Chinese belonging to British mon-of-war, ar- rested on a charge of gambling, has beea con- clalad. Each of the accused has been sentenced to imprisonment for 15 days and ordered to pay a fine of yen 2,5),

There seems some prospect of the proposed refrigerator-sanatorium at Saigon becoming an accomplished fast. A doorea his bean signed by the President of the Republic approving the resolution of the Coshin-China Council guar- anteeing to M. Grafia, the promoter, interest at five per cat, on a capital sum of 30,000 franos and the establishment of a sinking fund providin for the raptymeat of the capital in twenty-five years. The idea is to have 80 establish naut in which the air will be kept coal by refrigeration, so that any one can securə what is equivalent to a change to a cool climate In as easily as he can obtain a Turkish bath. cases of some forms of illness this would be invaluable, and for purposes of pleisure it would also be highly appres ate 1. It remains to be seen to what extent the idea is practicable. The native correspondent of the N. . Daily News, writing from Nanchang, the provincial capital of Kiaugsi, reports an instanca of bar. barity. arising from a feeling of revenge, which happened on the 24th August a few miles out- sile the Changchiang gate of that city. It ap. pearel that two small villages ware at fead about an irrigation creek, and miny fights hal already occurred between the two clans with varying success on either side. On the day in question while five men of one village were working in their rice fields, some twenty men from the other suddenly surrounded them and succeeded in beheading the fire. Two of these, who had been leaders in former fights, were cut into eight portions and their remains scattered about the scene of the murder.

As a prelude to the operation of the gold standard in Japan from October next some £7.645,867 sterling worth of gold he bean purchased by the authorities. This, together with the gold in stock at the Bank of Japan, is to form the material for minting the new gold coins. Since the issue of the new coinage law the Osaka Mint has been very busy. for they have to miat various kinds of gold coins to the amount of 43 million you before the 1st of Ostobar. Besi les this the Mint have to strike 10 million yen worth of su sidiary coins before the end of March next. It is said to be a grand sight to see lots of gold coins piled up in the workshops. Not a few foreigners are daily visiting the works to witness the unique spectacle.-Asahi.
