bok on at an outsider getting much cargo at -any- thing like remunerative rates. Coasting. There is no improvement in our coasting trade, in fact the dullness was intensified by a report which reached us a few days ago that in consequence of an addi- tional likin at Newchwang business entirely ceased, and the merchants closed their doors; but on writ- ing we are glad to be able to report that the difficulty has been settled, and everything is going on as usual; on business, being resumed there was a fair demand for steamers at slightly enhanced rates, and we be- lieve there have been fixtures to Kobe at eight cents. We have to record a charter from Nagasaki to this at sixty-five cents per ton of coal, which is the lowest rate on record; surely it would pay owners better to lay their graft up rather than run at this rate and suffer depreciation to both hull and engines. Rates of freight are:-London, by Conference Lines, general cargo 338.; waste silk 40s.; tea 408.; Northern Con- tinental ports, by Conference Lines, general cargo 35s.; waste silk 40s.; tea 40s.; New York, by Confer ence Lines, general cargo 40s.; tea 408.; New York rid London, by Conference Lines, general cargo 408 ; tea 45s.; Boston, by Conference Lines, general cargo 458.; lea 50s.; Philadelphia, by Conference Lines, general cargo 458.; tea 50s. Above rates are subject to a deferred return, as per Conference circular. London, by German mail, Shell, and Rickmers' Lines, general cargo 3's. 6d. net; Hamburg, by Ger- man mail, Shell, and Rickmers' Lines, general cargo 31s. 6d. net; New York, by German mail, Shell, and Rickmers' Lines, general cargo 40s. less 10 per cent; Havre direct, general cargo 323. 6d. net.; Genoa, tallow 32s. 6d.; general cargo 32s. 6d. nel.; Marseilles, tallow 32s. 6d.; general cargo 32s. 6d. net. 428. Gd per ton of 20 ext. for above three ports. New York, by sail, 17s. 6d.; New York by Pacific Lines, 1 gold cents per lb. Coast rates are:-Moji to Shanghai 75 cents nominal per ton coal; Naga- saki to Shanghai 70 cents nominal per ton coal.
