SHANGHAI, 21st-August.~(From Messrs. J. P. Bisset & Co.'s report.)-Business has been brisk during the week, chiefly in Hongkong and Shang. hai Bank shares, which shew an improvement in rates. Banks.Hongkong and Shanghai Bank shares changed hands locally at 182 to 186 per cent. premium, for cash, 184 for the 31st current, and 101 for the 31st October. Sales were also made to Hongkong at 184 and 185 per cent. premium. The closing cash rate is 184 per cent. premium, with exchange 75. There is no change to report in other Bank shares. Shipping.-Indo- China 8. N. shares have been sold at Tls. 873 and Tla B for delivery on the 31st December. Douglas Steamship Co.-Shares were purchased, from Hongkong, at $651. Docks.-Boyds are offering at Tls. 200. Shures in S. C. Farnham & Co. have been placed at Tls. 203 cash and Tls. 201 to Tls. 204 for 31st August. Marine Insurance.- North-Chinas have been sold at Tls. 190 and T 1924. Unions were placed to Hongkong at $227. A small lot of Yangtszes was sold at Tla. 112). Straits hare b en placed at $271 to $274, closing at $271. Fire Insurance. Hong kongs were placed to Hongkong at $380. Chinas changed lands at $14 and $95. Luzon shares have also found purchasers at $66 for the 31st current and $65 from Hongkong. A sale was also made to Hongkong at $661. Lands.-Stanghai Land Investment shares were placed and are offering at Tls. 80 The Directors have called up the Tix. 20 due on some of the shares. Payment must be made by the 31st December at latest. Industrial.-Business has been done in Major Brothers shares at Tls, 43, in Ewo Cotton shares at Tls. 85, and in Laou-Kung-Mow shares at Tis. 95. Shares of both the latter Companies are offering. Miscellaneous.-Shanghai (as shares have been placed at Tls. 205 and Tls. 210. Shanghai-Sumatra Tobacco shares were sold at Tls. 100 for the 31st current, and the same price | for cash. HONGKONG, 26th August.Our freight market during the past fortnight has continued very dull and the volume of business transacted has been very small. From Saigon to this there is no change to report and it is not likely that business will revive for some time. From Bangkok there is nothing doing. From Java to this one charter is reported, but the rate is very low. From. Iloilo to this also a little business has been done at very low figures. In Japan coal freights there has been very little doing. From Moji to this there is no enquiry for prompt tonnage and not more than $1.10 is obtain- able for forward loading. To Singapore a suitable steamer might be placed at $1.75 per ton. From Newchwang to Canton there is no enquiry. Sailing tonnage.--For New York one settlement is reported, lerms private. For San Francisco there does not seem to be much enquiry nt present.

There are nine vessels disengaged in port, register- ing 11,167 tons.
