SHANGHAI, 8th__MΜy.—(From Misers. Noël, Murray & Co.'s Piece Goods Trade report.)—— l'he week's business has been int rf-red with by The
race holidays and the sales reported are in-ignificant, but from the few transactions made publir it is evident there are no signs of weakness on the part of importers. This in a great ujensure can be recounted for by the alvanç s advis d from America and Manchester, several ordeta offered on the basis of last rates having been re- fused by the former market, while the latest telegrams from Manchester indicate that prices - there are now considerably above this; [Clear- ances con inne satislactory, but it is doubtful if the goods are taken for actual requirements, dealers merely paying for them as the romp s fall due and supplying their prescut requiremen:s from their stocks acquired some time ago. No changes to be noted in the advices from the outports, which continue to take >upplies in fair quantities, the chief drund from Tientsin and Shirtings and Indian Yarn. The former goods Hankow being for the better class of White
are in short supply here at the moment,” and 8-veral orders for forward delivery have fal en through owing to dealers declining to pay the advances asked by importers. The Szechen merchants have taken a fair quantity of Iudian spinnings, principally 20s., and have paid slight advancs a for the favourite chops. A fair busiores has also ben dong in 16s. for Chefoo, but prices are not st ong and in some instances slight res ductions on market quotations have been accepted. There was only one auction this week at which grey goods were offered, when the prices obtai.ed wer much the same as those realised the pre- vious week. Wooll ng on the other hand were rather weaker and prices vent ic favour of buyers. Metals. (from Mr. Alex. Bielfeld's report.- :th May:-
:-The rice holidays have, na qual at this season, interrupt'd business. Nothing of ay importance has been done. Bright ra Wire has advanced heavily, frightening|buyers off. Arvices from home report gener. 1-koue as steady and firm, but here the prevailing tenden y of buyers is to wait und hold off.
JOINT STOCK SÍLARES. HONGKONG, 12th May. The market has continued to rule dull and quiet, with an in- olination to declining rates, and beyond a flutter in Punjoms we have nothing special to report.
BANKS.-Hongkong and Shanghais have further declined, offers to sell to 183 per cent. prem. meeting with no response. The London
