SHANGHAI, 12th December.-(Fron Mr. Geo. W. Noël's report.)-All prospect of any business of im, ortance being done now before the New Year settling has been knocked on the head by the sudden collapse in sterling rates, which has caught the natives napping in much the same way as manufactures in Lancashire were recently treated by the rise in Cotton. Few seem to have been prepared for it and the haste with which many endeavoured to get cover, when the further decline appeared imminent, no doubt accentuated the

fall. It has apparently been arrested for the present, the low rates bringing out a fair quantity of private paper, quotation, at the same time, being fully a penny below the equivalent of silver

As was to be expectel better prices have been paid at the later auctions this week, but not at all commensurate with the fall in sterling rates, particularly in the case of Woollens.
