THE FOOTBALL CLUB DINNER.
After the excellent dinner was members, listened to some of the most mirthful served, the company, which numbered about fifty and witty speeches heard in Hongkong, full of rare humour and happy sentiments befitting the sented three badges and four caps to the most distin- occasion. During the evening the President pre- guished and useful men in the Association and cordance with the decision of the special com- Rugby teams during the season of 1894-5, iu ac-

The following toasts were proposed
The CHAIRMAN said-Gentlemen, the report baving been in your hands during the specified time, we will with your permission take it as read. It cannot be denied that the results of the half- year are bad, because of decreased output and heavy losses on miners' advances. As to the out-kong Football Club held their first dinner, since On Friday evening the members of the Hong put of tin not being so large as you would have that Bourishing Club was instituted a few years liked, you must admit, gentlemen, that this has ago, in the spacious drawing room of the Hong- been anticipated, and anticipated about two years kong Hotel which ago, for if you turn to the reports two years ago,
was tastefully decorated you will find that the directors gave a forecast The genial and popular President of the with flowers and banting for the occasion. that our mines were being exhausted, and that the time was coming for us to look ont for fresh Club, the Hon. J. II. Stowart Lockhart, oc- fields for this company to work upon, and that capied the chair, while on either side of him the directors have been looking out for fresh

In this connection it may be mentioned that this week we have had a lotter from Mr. Money who reports very fa a valley in the Bangkoi River and you will also rably on be glad to hear that a first shipment of ore in the 829,521.48 shape of 50 piculs has been already received 26,786.60 from Maliwun. I have no doubt that you will consider the writing off of the sum of $12,997 for 18,510.15 bad and doubtful debts a very heavy item, but that has been forced upon us in part through the exhaustion of old mines or the necessity of closing them, and in part it has been caused by the high price of opium, of which the miners insist
on obtaining a supply and without which they cannot or will not work. The directors trust that their recom- mendation of appropriating the profits of the last half year, viz, the sum of $4,209, by placing the sum of $2,723 to the reserve fund, thus bringing the reserve to its previous amount of $25,000, and of carrying forward the balance, will meet with your aproval. The testing of the tin bearing lode which we mentioned to you in previous reports is still being continued. Mr. Roberts, who is testing this 30,271.49 lode, speaks very hopefully of it, but the 2,625.93 directors will not sink any great amount in 123,321.87
machinery until they are thoroughly satisfied Tls. 156,218.84 that the lode exists, and that it will be in the interests of the shareholders to work it. I think I have dealt with all the points that is necessary and before moving the adoption of the report. and accounts I shall be very glad to answer any questions you may wish to ask.

DISMISSAL OF THE VICEROY OF CANTON.
From the Chung Ngoi San Po we learn that an Imperial edict dated the 14th inst. was re- ceived from Peking in Canton by telegraph on the 2'rd inst. It was issued in response to a 57 memorial presented by two Censors who said 424.11 that Li Han-chaug, Viceroy of Canton, Yang 507,768.80 On-tin and Wang Kam-fook, military officers, Yang Man-tsun. Acting Judge, Luk Wai-ki, Expectant Taotsi, and Pua Tai-him. Magistrate of Sin Oi district, were quite incompetent for the posts they held, that they were lazy and wanting in ability, and that they paid no special attention to public duties. The decree of the 14th inst. approves of the memorial, and orders Li Han-chang to retire from office and return to his native village to spend the remainder of his life, for he himself had memorialized the Throne sometime ago asking permission to go back to
