THE COOLIE STRIKE.
PUBLIC MEETING IN THE CITY MALL.
On Thursday afternoon a public meeting con- 119,730.49 vened by the Chamber of Commerce was held at the City all to consider the crisis canad by 34,216.58
the coolie strike. The room was crowded. The 26,164.33 Hon. J. J. Keswick was un nimously voted to
the chair. 30,186.90
The CHAIRMAN As yoh have seen from the 37,746.57
notice, this is a meeting called by request of 15,921.06
those who are interested in the employment of labour in the colony. It is not, I assume, the 16,069.75
wish of any gentleman bere present either by 1,275.00 word or act to say or d'inse to be done anything 273.98 which will iu any respect weaken the hands of 184.17
the Government as against the strong com- 2,370.01

There can be no question that it is an exceedingly grave occors 1,241,204.41 ||rence which is at the present time taking place, as it is impossible to say how it may end, and the daily losses are extensive. I think that every. one who may address the meeting will be anxious to make suggestions as to what steps should be taken to provide labour in the face of the position of the labourers properly belonging to the colony, I therefore hope that all speakers will moderate, as far as possible, their remarks in order to strengthen the hands of the Government and weaken the hands of the combination (AP- plause). I may remark that it is a singular thing that these labourers who are now on strike are sb«olutely unaware of why they have taken this stand. As a matter of fot they have been misled entirely by the bead men and other persons who are on strike without the smallest knowledge of what they want.
