As we departed from Hanoi, I handed my American passport to the officer on duty. I noted that he appeared to be about my age and therefore must have had clear, unpleasant, memories of the American war. He looked at my passport, smiled broadly, and said, 'You are an American.' I responded affirmatively and he then went on to say, 'You are welcome in my country.'
