The nation of South Africa cuts its tios Story of world's
with the Commonwealth today and emerges as the world's youngest
republic, the 22nd to be created on the newest republic
African continent and the only one still wholly ruled by whites.
Early yesterday the new republic's 15 million citizens were awakened by the pealing of church bells, blaring of brass bands and the rumble of giant crowds thronging the streets of the nation's cities.

But underneath it all ran a nervous current stemming from the country's biggest headache, its controversial and much criticised policy of Apartheld-the separa- tion of the white and black races.

a burglar who worked alone, committing his burglaries between 3 am and 6 am and i then leaving by the first morning train to Canton, where he disposed of the stolen property, Lo Wa-so, 26, unemployed appeared on remand before Mr W. Scho- field, at the Central Magis- tracy on Saturday morning, charged on six counts burglary and receiving.
Defendant admitted the burglary charges, and the receiving charges were ac- cordingly withdrawn by Inspector Carey. Defendan! was sentenced to a total of one year's hard labour, and two years' Police supervi- sion. It was stated he had ADVen previous convictions for larceny.
