BIRTH OF LUFTHANSA
In 1923 there were numerous airlines in Germany. The stronger lines merged with Luftreederei to form German Aero-Lloyd.
In 1926, German Aero-Lloyd gave birth to the German Lufthansa, a private corporation with Government sanction.
After the last war the German airline was re-established and In 1954 the cor- poration's capital was increased to 10 million marks and the name Lufthansa re- sumed,

A Feature Of
Post-War Recovery
The German airline was recreated in 1952 with a small capital which permitted orders for three DC-38, four Convair 2308 and four Lockheed Super Constellations. Meanwhile Lufthansa established its own pilot training school in Bremen and is the only commercial airline to maintain such a school.
Lufthansa had increased its trans-continental fleet to 34 air- craft by 1959, and Boeing jets were introduced last year.
Air routes now extend from Europe to North and South America, Africa, the Near, Middle and Far East.

A leet of Boeing 707-430 Inter-continental jels were put into service by Lufthansa in 1960,
Powered by Rolls-Royce engines, these aircraft are capable of u 600-miles-an-hour cruising speed.
Orders have also been placed for Boeing 120-B30 medium- range Jets.
The "Senator" luxury service was inaugurated late in 1930 for first and do luxe class passengera.
One Millionth Passenger in 1960
On November 22, Lufthansa welcomed Its one millionth pas- Benger in 1980 on board one of its jet aircraft.
In 1950, 693,400 passengers were carried, as compared with 550,114 in 1958, and 74:070 In 1930.
Lufuumsa's non-duplicated route miles have grown from op- proximately 5,000 miles in 1935, to close on 70,000 miles in the present day. In 1959 the German airline registered approximately 050,000,000 passenger miles as compared to approximately 775,000,000 passenger miles in 1958,
