THE DEATH OF A
GREAT HORSE
By CLIVE GRAHAM
He was one of the great ones of the Turf-this |

The name: Hyperion, a chestnut colt bred by the late Lord Derby in 1930 and winner of the much-discussed 1933 Epsom Derby.
His sire was the triplecrown winner Gainsborough, his dam Selene. As a lon! he was so under-sized that his trainer, George Lambton, wondered whether he would be worth the trouble and expense of being put to racing.
But he decided that the lit- tle colt had so much courage and character in his de meanour that the chance way worth taking.
He never grow beyond 15 hands inches high-a mere stt. 14in.---but he established his great racing reputation, nine wins from 13 starts in the top class, by sheer effronters.

Tommy Weston, his jockey, said of him: "1e was only a little horse, but he could beat the big 'uns by gamesmanship Stride for stride, he would find himself ouldona- but he would then quicken his action and put his rival of balance."
A piquant touch was given to Hyperion's Derby by the action of Steve Donoghue on Lord Derby's second string Thrapston, This colt, in the lead around Tattenham Corner, went wide- opening up a gap at this crucial stage which was quickly Ly Tommy Weston,

Hyperion, despite muscular trouble, went on to win the St Leger, but he could never be made really it during his four-year-old career.
