U.S. LOSS OF GOLD

WAS BIGGEST

FOR ONE DAY

London, Nov. 8.

The United States loss of $175 million worth of gold last Thursday, disclosed today, is the big- gest loss for any one day since the collapse of 1931 and probably the biggest for any day in all time.

It was already known that France bought nearly $117 mil- lion of gold from the U.S. Treasury last Thursday, to repay the major part of her remaking debt of $131 million to the Inter- national Monetary Fund.

The $58 million of gold taken by other countries on the day was self large,

able of behag converted Into claims on it.
