DECLINE IN VOLUME
Investors hold
but back prices stay firm
The London gold speculation and the coming American presidential elections combined to keep investors away from the Hongkong stock market during the week, resulting in a decline in the volume of business. But prices re- mained firm.
The downward trend of prices during the earlier part of the week was chocked yesterday when small gains were record- ed in tnost sections.
Yesterday's Improved under. tope was attributed to news that a reduction in the London bank rate was almost certain and momentarily expected.
The ending of the London gold scramble and the recovery In the New York stock market have also helped to steady the Hongkong market.
Banks continued their strong upward trend during the week, closing at $1.310, which is $20 higher than the previous Thurs- day's figure.
Walsons and Lombards were also strong during the week. Watsons moved up to 520 com- pared with last Thurday's figure
Lombards of $27.80. $1,60 at $39.
