ABOVE: The world's first sun-powered car with its inventor American scientist - Dr Charles Escoffery. The car, a 1912 electric brougham, had its first run in London the other day over Waterloo Bridge. It is fitted with a roof panel containing over 10,000 solar cells made of silicon, an element which forms a large part of stones. Similar cells are used to power equipment in space satel» liter. The cells in the panel convert the sun's heat into electric power which is then stored in the car's batteries. It takes eight hours of sunlight to provide power for an hour's driving at 20 mph.
