THE QUEEN ACCEPTS WAH WAN'S PORTRAIT

IT is a long way from a

hilltop in Shaukiwan to Buckingham Palace. But 50-year-old Wah Wan, an amateur golden-· straw artist, found à short cut.

For two years, he worked quietly away at his humble hill- top siudio, in the evenings, on rainy days, and over the week- ends.

His materials included a. Abre board, alcohol, black shellac, paste, knife, forceps, bamboo lcaves. ugg shell and plenty of reed and straw.

The materials were all com- monplace but the artist's.magic touch turned it into a resplen- dent portrait of the Queen full

of regel splendour.

Glittered

It glittered in dim light as if it were gold. The mosaic-like bas-relief in straw against a dark background. brought the Queen's figure to life brilliantly. When he had finished it, Wah Wan packed it up and sent it by arface mall to the Qucen at Buckingham Palace!

That was on February 29, this year.

Neighbours laughed him off. Friends jeered, "Crazy! It would be a miracle if it were not re- Jected. What do you expect from the Palace? A letter of reply?"

But the miracle did happen. He could not believe his own eyes one April morning when a letter of acceptance from Buck- ingham Palace did reach his hands in his bumble studio in Shaukiwan

< ....Her Majesty greatly admired the redulous care with which you have made this remarkably good likeness of her from bite of golden straw and she is delighted to

accept it, both on its merits and as a token of your loyal

and generous sentiments........”

As his eyes glanced over the leiter, his heart beat with ex- citement and gratitude.

The Queen's portrait

"What goes to make up the royal portrait?" I asked.

The crown, necklace, teeth, eyes, robe, glove, right arm, and

the medaillon were made of the. whitest wheat straw.

Rice straw went into the

shoulder jewellery, flower pat- term, shades and shadows.

Sparsely planted reed formed the hair, ps, pupils, and the sash Bamboo leaves made up the end of the sash,

The jewel on the left ear was of eggshell,

.

All in all, it was a rare port ralt by an artist who is possibly urique.

The former art student at Chek Shek Art College in Canton, and Shanghai Art Col-

He hit upon the idea one day when he realised that green straw, when dried, would turn 4 lovely golden yellow and would last for a long, long time. "When made into a picture, it would look completely dif- ferent from oil and water colour.
