Singaporo in some respects is very much like Hongkong goographically and economically, but whereas Hongkong's position as a transhipment point for the hinterland-main- land China-is almost non-existent now, Singapore is still the major port for the Federation.

SPORTATION
Specialisation in cargo ships, its effect on trade
ALTHOUGH dry-cargo shipowners continue to
enjoy reasonably profitable trading conditions, they cannot yet be sure that the improvement in freight markets is of a lasting nature. Total world laid-up tonnage, at 5.6 million tons gross, is still considerable in volume, and the summer slack period lies ahead. But at least the depression is giving shipowners time to think and plan for the future, and the slump is providing poin,s for meditation.
Same 2,4 million tons TOSS DI vessels are Inid up dry-cargo throughout the world. But only about 105,000 tons of the world total represent ships built since
1045.
