knighthood in 1952 when he was in charge of Britain's first atom bomb tests at Monte Bello. years later he made Britain an H-bomb power with a scries of tests on Christmas Island.

Today he is much happier in his less spectacular role as Member for Research of the U.K. Atomic Energy Authority, being chiefly concerned with the uses of atomic energy for peaceful purposes and helping the world to find a workable disarmament scheme.
His recent experiments with high explosive have been confined to dis- covering how far underground dis- turbances can be detected. Now he has visited the United States with Mr Mac- millan to help put forward a scheme for inspection of nuclear tests.
