France

THESE are the clothes making news today

and the big surprise is that they're as English as roast beef. These are the first pictures of a victory, winners of the most successful assault launched on France since D Day.

It is more than three weeks since the Incorporated Society of London Fashion Designers braved the barbs of the French Press to show the cream of their collec- tions to the fashion buyers of the world in Paris.

It was one of those mistimed, mismanaged and totally magnificent gestures which the English occasionally manage to pull off. The result: A sudden unexpected Transatlantic vogue for Le Style Anglais.

Hardy Amies, president of the society, told me: "We've had a fantastic reception. American stores,

which haven't bother-

ed to buy from London for Reven years or 80, have placed substantial orders. It's very encouraging."

What are they so wild about, these normally hard-hearted arbiters of American inste? Well, they have gone over- board for the kind of clothes we've been wearing with slight variation for years.

very

THEY LOVE what they call our "awanky" tailored suits, for they claim that no one in the world understands the cut and hang of fabric, beller than the English tailor.

THEY LOVE our full-length, really formal evening dresses.

THEY LOVE the simplicily of our day dresses and the know- ledge that any one of them is already wearable fashion-no business about adoplations here,

THEY LOVE Gilt British- made fabrics-the fine silk and wool mixtures.

Nothing extreme, fashions we've taken for granted for years. A prophet is not with- out honour save in his own country

THEN you have a doubtful trump holding in the com- blaed hands your best play is to leave the trump suit alone und to develop a cross ruff. Sometimes this will produce surprisingly good results,

Here is a hand with which Ed Moir of Pittsburgh was able to two- gather in 10 tricks at a diamond contract by use of this principle.
