ABOVE: Britain's best (and only) maker of boots for elephants is, Wilfrid. Hunter of Doncaster, who combines a flourishing human clientele with the business of cobbling for animals. "Making boots for animals," the cobbler, says, "is more interesting than repairing people's shoes. You have to think a bit and use your imagination." He's used his .... imagination to make fashionable fur bootees for "Mayfair poodles, soft shoes for footsore dogs, and even a corrective boot for a lume duck. But currently he's working on his biggest ever order — a set of elephant boots (above) ordered by a wealthy Indian gantoman" who wants them for ceremonial occasions.
