has been the almost complete lack of person- alities. The retirement of some stars, and the absence through injury of Stan Matthews and single Nat Lofthouse means there is, not a top-class player, whose presence can boost gate.
That may seem a harsh statement to make when you consider that quite a number of sides have settled down well. But I feel the absence of PERSONALITY PLAYERS is a very serious problem.
Players like Alex James, Feter
Doherty, Frank Swift, Tommy Lawton, Raich Carter, and Matthews could light up a game and pull in the crowds by sheer individuality and flair of character,

The cash-minded observe that as extra individual effort brings no-extra cash reward,-why run, the risk of being accused ot becoming a one-man band?
I cannot agree with any of these viewpoints: 1 cannot imagine there is a manager in the league who would not welcome a new crowd-puller. I don't mean a clown fr ex- hibitionist bul a player with talcat, a sense of showmanship and one who knows the limalt of free expression.
The sort of player with these qualities would stand out in all sorts of situations. But they have certainly disappeared in the past few years.
