The majority of Colony telephones will be gradually changed over to six-digit numbers, spokesman for the Hongkong Telephone Company said yesterday.

Between now and 1963, the end of the first phase in the Telephone Company's expansion pro gramme, thousands of telephones on the Island and the Malaland will be transferred from old exchanges to three now exchanges at North Point, Mongkok and Kowloon City,

The spokesman said that all the equipment in the new exchanges was designed for the six-digit system, although some of the present five-digit lines on the old exchanges would still remain "for an indeterminate number of years***
