"Commando" Course For Teenage
Forty-five schoolchildren, nil about 14, and all promising swimmers romped in the water last week with Britain's Olympic champion Judy Grinkam, at the opening of a 2-day "commando" course in swim- ming technique at the Southall open air pools, in London's outskirts.
For the whole 2 days, the children will do nothing but swim and learn to swim in a miniature version of the Loughborough training course which Britain's top swimmers periodically undertake to toughen up for international competition.

Loud laughter greeted Big John as he pushed his way through the bar door of his favourite club. It was early evening and a very successful nine holes at Deep Water Bay had put the big follow in a particularly satisfied frame of mind. "I'm just in the mood for laughter, lager and luxury," he said as he joined Mr Wong who was in the middle of a small group of members at the dice shakers' end of the bar.
He looked at the array of neat empty glasses and turned to tho No. 1 Boy with the comment "It seems as though the first laugh is definitely on me. FRI them up... and nake mine a long cool beer. You know my favourite branal." Turning to the group he enquired "What was all that laughter about? Ian someone Just returned from rome leave and imported a new line in doubtful difties?”
Humour In Sport
"Oh i was nothing like that. Julia,” replied one of the party as he quickly drained his glass in order to catch up with the now arrival's contribuilon to the liquld enteraltiment, as a maller of fact we've just been talking about the humour that exists in sport. The laugh you heard na you came lo the door was raised by Wong's story about how you thought he had entered for the 1959 Walkathon...."
"So he's been dragging that our up again, has he?" interrupted BIE John, his goodfellowship temporarily forgotten, "he I'm sure his missus must be Just loves telling that tale, fed up to the teeth with H. She's had it three times a day and twice on Sunday since it happened. But," he continued with a new twinkle in his eye, "I agree with you there is plenty of good healthy humour in sport. In fact I've just dene nine holes at Deep Water Bay with an American business friend who is here for a few days and he Was telling me about a couple of star heavywolght boxers who met in a night club iti New York, The evening pleasantly enough but eventually it developed into an open argument about the relative pugilistic merlis of the two fighters.
started
"The inevitable disagreement arose and, jumping to his feet one
of them drew back his great list. For two pins,...and of course lifty per cent of the gate, television, radio and film rights I'd punch you straight on the nose.* John signed for the drinks with undisguised satisfaction at the success of his story and while he was thus engaged one of the group popped in
"Witch most intercaling question. sport do you think provides the greatest fund of stories?" he asked, addressing his query to the purly generally.
Golfing Story
There was a spontaneous reaction and before Big John could get back into the fray about a dozen sports had all had a men- tion. The big fellow took time oui to do further justice to his drink and as he got ready to make his contribution to the conversation Mr Wong beat him to it.
II
Di John ever tell you folks his own tragle golfing story?
happened many years ago soon after he cupte out to long- kong as a hopeful young business man,...but I mustn't sleal bia thunder. Tell them yourself, John, after all it's your story."
It did not take a lot of coaxing to zet John talking although he pointed out that it was a bit much’asking him lɑ tell a story against himself no early In the evening.
"Actually this story is a warning to those who spend too much time at the 10th-but of course Ive learned a lat
more sense now," he stated us an opening gambit, "and, as my dear old friend Weng was good enough to point out, it hap pened many years ago. After a game of rolf I got mixed up in the mother and father of all celebrations—I've nover been quite sure what we were celebraling-and the next morning I woke up with the worst hang-over of my lite. First of all I fell out of bed. My head" fell as though it would burst at any moment, und my poɑr tummy WAS in open revolt against the treatment it had received. I quickly decided against even trying to get to work and I picked up the telephone to call the bow who had always shown himself a reasonable sert af soul.
#
"I'll never forget that conversation as long as I live. 1 told him
- who was calling and sald I was very sorry that due to
terrible cold I would not be able to come to the office. I expressed the hope that he would be able to manage with- out me.
"ife sounded vary sympathelle. I'm very sorry to hear about your cold' he said, 'and don't worry about your work, Just you stay in bed all day.! I was delighted uniil be finished with the remark By the way. Isn't it lucky that today is Sun- day.
You could have plonked me on the probiscus with a putter."
Big John's story started things going and acon minds were being -
searched for suitable material to keep the party going.
Memories
"Talking of golf,” chipped in Mr Wong, “brings back memories of a very embarrassing moment i had with one of my kids on the golf course at Fanling.
"Young Tom, he was litile more than a toddler at the time, esma up to me on the verandah and in a loud voice presented me with a very good golf ball. He told me he had found it. I remember his words 'It was lost, daddy, and I found 16' 1 was still a bit suspicious and I asked him if he was positive It was lost and I got the priceless reply that of course he wda sare il was lost because he saw the man who'd lost it looking for It! ! ! ...... Was my face red. I played 'my next few games at Deep Water Bay,"
"I like the story that is told about a famous old British sporting personality who was known to enjoy the social side of meny games,” said one of the group when the boy had refilled the glasses at Mr Wong's request. "He was invited to be quest of honour at a big Rugby Union dinner and he rather shook the officials by mingling with the other nuests soon after his arrival and wishing them all · Good-night." 'But surely you're not leaving älready?' asked the Prvaldent, ‘Of course not,' replied the guest of honour, “but I know my weak- ness and I also know all about rugby hospitality. I'm saying good-night while I can still see you,"
Classic Reply
There was lighthearted reference to historio zuzby Jux-Ups' at the Club and another member of the group took the opportunity to tell how his wife had shown abysmal ignorance of sport- Ing affairs a few days earlier when he happened to make esanal comment that Burrey wickets were now chomper than ever. This produced the classic reply that 'maybe they were but the overall cost of Rving was still muchi 100 high! 1 Bix John looked at his watch and indicated that he had to be na his way. "Well it's been very pleasant meeting you all. Let's get together agalu and zwap a few more yarns no whether they are trus or feilelous...and Jant to show, my good faith here is one for the road...is atory, I mean...............
• and again I tell it against myself.
