Paris.
Dubbed the "bare-footed, beer-drinking_botanist" by Britain's national pross, 23-year-old Michael Bruce Swinton Tulloh was the sensation of the Amateur Athletic Association Championships at London's White City Stadium last week. In actual fact, Tulloh's 13 minutes 31.2 seconds in winning the AAA Three Miles Championship was not the greatest performance of the two-day meeting of the White City and pales besides the 28 minutes 12.4 seconds for the Six Miles on Friday evening by policeman Stan Eldon, followed by his 13 minutes 38.6 seconds in third place in the Three Miles the following day. This was done in between regular flat-footing beats. The excitement In the nation al press was prompted as much by the fact that Tulloh ran bare-foot as by the fhet that in- chided were Southern Champion Kevin Gilligan, who only likes ls fags while Tallch likes his Leer, defending (though fired)

While Tulloh was undoubted- ly overshadowel by Stan Ellon, who still had plenty but quite enough left after his Six Miles victory on the previous evening, his performance! noverthalexs was quite T-
markable,
To begin with, Olymple (1952 Champion Emati Zatopek Gamus) es un identical best tine with Tulch's #419<h only 13 men have run faster. They happen to be 13 of the greatest ever "middle long distatico" runners In history-Albert Thomas (Australia), Sandor Thares (Hungary). He also
moves up to 35th place on the all-line Three Milts 5,000 Metres world list,
For the current year he b the fastest man in Britain and the over Three Miles second fatest in the Com- monwealth, behind New Zealand's Murray Halberg. In 1950's world ranking Hst for the Three Miles/5,000 metres he moves up to eighth place.
Not Quite Ready
is on
Ja sudden rise to fame has www.her frightened Bruce Teloh The suggestion that he was now a British International (he is very likely to be selected to nin against the USSR and Finland Luter in the year) was met with the words: "B-but I am not quite ready for that yel" In actual fact, Tulloh performance the year's best in Britain and it would be a pity. Indeed it the British Amaleur Athletic Board did not blood him as a full International. But he is quite correct about the fact that he is not ready for the "big time". To begin with, he is, not a Three-Miler but more of a Six-Miter for which distance he is yet too young though he finished (10th in thic race at the British Games ut the. While City in May.
It would be most unwise on Tulloh's part, however, to turn seriously to the Six Miles and 10.000 Metres distances now and ho would beat reserve his ap proach to the longer distances Another three of four years after some concerted effort over Two and Three Miles.
