A 19-year-old Australian, Rod Laver, took the honours on the rain-spoiled third day of the lawn tennis champion- ships at Wimbledon when he knocked out the formidable Dane, Kurt Nielsen, the 7th seeded player, in straight sets. Nielsen, runner-up in 1953 and 1955, had been freely tipped as a possible winner of a very open Wimbledon, but his challenge ended in the second round when the Queans- land youngster won 10-8, 6-4, 7-5.
