Successful First Trial Of Wood's Starting Gates
THE WOOD'S STARTING GATES
The four new mechanical starting boxes, recently imported from New Zealand by the Hongkong Jockey Club, were tested at the Valley early this morn- ing.
Of the eight horses taking part in the experiment, only one refused to enter the box. Alex Gift, a notoriously bad actor, shied away from the box each time he was led up to the en trance.
*FURTHER TESTS However, all the other ponies went in
with a little persuasion, and jumped out quite smartly when the gate was released.
The decision as to whether the Jockey Club will use the new starting system, known as Wood's Starting Gates, or hot will be made after further tests |
are carried out. The new system has two advantages,
Firstly, if adopted, the mechanical starting gates will limit the field to 12 ponies, This should give the panter an even chance of cashing his tickels, and "crowding out" of runners after the start should be eliminated. Secondly, every pony in training at the
present time will have to be taught to use the gates before the beginning of autumn. This should keep the trainers fairly busy during the close season. New ponies too will have to be broken in,
After the tests, comments from some of
the local riders and trainers, namely Alex Lam, Peter Plumbly, David Yau, Ringo Lai, Nick Metrevelli and George Sofronoff, were favourable, All felt that the trial was a success.

The race was run in a strong wind and after six and a half ales Norris took the lead from Mimoun and the French star never recovered the Kround.
Norris covered the ten miles In 40 minutes 19 seconds, one minute seven seconds outside Zntopek's record of 43 mins 12
Mimoun's time was 50 minules 50 seconds,
At the ten-mile mark Mimoun was nearly a lap behind the Belton miner and Heatley had been tailed off. The Scottish ruuter, however, had managed to stay with Norris and at that point he recorded a similar Ume. Good Lead
