TERENCE RATTIGAN

MAKES HIS FIRST

VISIT TO THE EAST

+

LOOKING amazingly relaxed and handsomely tanned after several wecks of travelling, Mr Terence Rattigan, the famous playwright last week spent a few days in Hongkong. It was his first trip to the Far East.

This pleasant two-month holiday trip will culminate in a visit to New York where he will be on hand for the Television production of "The Browning Version" starring Sir John Gielgud and Margaret Leighton,

"I am particularly interested in this," he said, “as 1 wrote the play especially for John Gielgud."

Mr Rattigan, who has recently been nominated for an Oscar for the screen play of "Separate Tables”, hos just completed a new play entitled "Ross".

A dramatic portrait, the play will star Sir Alec

year's time.

LIKES BASEBALL

SOMETIMES fate plays a trick and turns a bitter Guinness and will have its first performance in about a

disappointment into a pleasant surprise. Such was the case of Miss Elaine Best whom, upor winning the 'Miss Secretary of Australia' contest, was treated to a round-the-world trip, a travelling wardrobe and a £1,000 car.

Originally however, Elaine had her heart set on study- ing medicine. But when circumstances prevented this she decided to take a secretarial course instead!

On the first lap of her this globe-trotting tour, pelite, hazel-eyed beauty- said that of all her stop- overs, she is most anxious to see Rome.

Her interest in this famed city was sharpened recently when she was introduced to Robert Helpmann;

"He advised me,' she said, "to see as much of Italy. as I can."

ELAINE BEST

Of the 18 plays he has written, Mr Rattigan con- siders "Ross" to be his best, but adds, "You always con- sider the one you're working on at the moment to be your best. You have bol"

Sharing the typical Briton's love of golf, cricket and shooting, he also enjoys the somewhat un-English game of baseball.

"I was first introduced to the game," he says, "by the 8-year-old son of an American friend. And after half an hour of watching it, I was explaining it to him!”

It is not hard to understand then, that when Mr Rattigan makes trips to America, he is particularly pleased if they coincide with the baseball season,

Unfortunately, a time limit prevented her from seeing very much of the Colony but she did manage to squeeze in a few hours shopping.

High on her 'roust' list was jewellery--in particular, jade

which she was hoping to send home to her family.

Artist's Baggage Problems

MRS

"Quite enough for one! family!" she exclaims.

On the 'go' every year since, their marringe in 1921, Mrs Steinhilber says that an annual painting trip is seldom less than four months but rarely as long ns the 15 months this pre- sent trip will require.
