cement in local public works formed the subject of a question in the House of Commons Mr S. $. Hammersley, Conservative Member for Stockport alleged that the Hongkong Government had falled to carry out its Implied pro mise to use Green Island cement as far as possible.
A Hongkong Government spokesman, denying that "out of forty-two Public Works in- vitations for tenders, the Gov- ernment specified Jupinero cement In-30 cases," made the following statement:
•
"Truls is not to say that Japaneso cement la never used. We always, ask for alterative enders, one if Japanese cement is used and one if British (or Green laland) cement is used; and sometimes the difference is enormous,
Tho
former La much cheaper, (even though it Ja up to British standard, some- body has to go to pár).
"We try to strike a balance between ruining our focal in- dustry and making the pubile pay too much and we have done our
utmost for British cement which is being used exclusively in the Shing Mun Valley scheine..
"Anti-dumping legislation is altogether opposed to our policy in Hongkong, where free trade has always existed, anil. It would be a great departure in- deed."
