TAAN TAAT: Egg-lari. The second element is borrowed from
English. TAEL: The trade-name of the Chinese ounce or lank, formerly cquivalent to 1,000 cash. The word was borrowed by the Portuguese In Mainya, but it is possible that It originated in Indla. The British had it in turn from the Portuguese. The carliest Portuguese reference to this word recorded in Hobson- Jobson is one in Mendes Pinto (1540) and the first English in Captain T. The Chinese characters used for writing tanks are those for "egg" and "family" but the Tankas are probably no more "egg-familles" than are the Hakkas "guest-families".
