Tommy Atkins ARMY SPORTS
PARADE
Promises they say are made to be broken but Tommy Atkins feels that where possible they should be kept, and he therefore directs his spotlight this week on the gallant sextet from St George's School who in the six-a-side hockey league have at last won a game after twenty successive defeats. This featuring of lowly St George's resulted from a promine mate several weeks ago and re- pended on many occations that I would give them the headline 1 they should win a match bul # defent followed defent it seemed at one time that this was most unlikely to materialize.
However, nút content with de- feating a similarly lowly team, the "Done" aimed high and toppled no less reputed a leaip than B Comparly RASC 'A' who were at that stage lying 8fth in the table. And they made a go job of it too, by ending up" 4-1 shead.
Better Team Lost
To keep my promise to S! Georges I have had to lenom: The realty news of this week's
activities, the defeat of lenging loudlets und almost certain them- plans, the Rayat Signals A after twenty-one victories in succession
va Kowloon "Battle" which has been postponed on account of the winther from last Tuesday The coming one. The three tesimis front earh zone will mest each other and the first match between the two 'A' sides will slari at 1700 hrs the others follow at half hour intervals,
No Seeding
There will be nu "seeding" in the knock-out competition and every team will have Dy exqual chance the draw will be made when most enthusiasts are pre-
n and this has been selected as the most appropriate op- portunity to publicise the com- petition. All units are reminded that if they wish to enter more teams they have unti). Saturday to inform the organisers.

The opening gaines of the league.
The RASC Belding two Hong- kong OR's played as though they expected a heavy defeat but were fighting to keep the score town, It was interesting to watch the gradual change coming_aves the side ne it slowly dawned on them that they could win.
Opened Account
Always looking the better side. to Signals swatnied around their opgunent goal and it was only in an occasional break-awny that 5 altacked and was from one of these, late in the first huit, that they opened their Berount.
Even with a goal up I doubt If any succulators would have taken long odds on an RASC victory. The Signals hoked supremely confident, and it acemed as if it were only a mut- ter of time before they raced into the lead. But after a couple af penalty bullius had been missed, the RASC side gradually began to think in terms of a 1-0 victory and the Signals of a similar margin of defeut Increasing the tempa they found that the slight drizzle had nude the court very slippery and time titl agal players found themselves desperately trying to avoid nwasuring their lengths on the court, several unsuccessfully.
All twelve players were in the RASC holt and how the de- fenders kept the ball out of the goal is beyond me.
Serious Situation Desparate long clearances of the defence led to the few RASC allacks, and from one of these a pennily bully was awarded, and converted. The Signals put everything they had into what was by now a serious situation. Two down and only a few minutes to go, they kept the ball constantly in 50% circle, but were never able to score.
Sgt Baverstock in defence played the game of his life and much of the credit for this un- expected victory must go to him, L. Payne the skipper also did more than his fair share and the other four stalwarts will be able to boast "we did our bit too,"
Seldom have I seen so superior a team lose, Was it that Signals under-rated The opposition? Certainly they had a couple of reserves out and certainly they played as winners until the second goal sank them. The conditions, ton, played a "part In nlowing down their very fast attack.
Surprises have so far been few in this exciting league competi- tion and this gift from the Gods will be seized by runners-up Command Workshops REME and BMIT Kowloon,

The former are all my tip for honours although I under atand their scholar S/Sgt Hors- fall will be leaving them very His replacement could well be the deciding factor.
With two stars unfit, defence mon S/Sgt Arley, and Airbome. BMI, at any moment will in my opinion fall by the wayside, With still nine matches to play I doubt if they will make it, but ut any rate the closing matches should be full of interest,

A Suggestion
For those Units who have overlocked sending in names of who have players on the border fine whom they can decide whether to put forward or not may 1 suggest that they give the Mangra ring at BMI Hong- kong and leave the rest to him. If the Army team can take up where I left off last senson we ean expect to find a ride brim- ful of confidence and team spirit, and with a 101 more support this 14 son than they had last year— who knows-they might even topple the mighty South China from their lofty position.

The al is being played at Sek Kong this afternoon and although I taney the Infantrymes to take the trophy, the home side will not give in without a struggle.
The team and Individual Army championships will be next week's star sporting attraction and I have flttle doubt that quite a good crowd of spectators will turn out at the delightful swimming pool at Sek Kong lu watch what should be a tense struggle for supremacy in the team event and all-out efforts from those the individual competition.
Very Confident Many fancy that the 1/NTR will retain the team trophy they ao convincingly

SOCCER CONDUCT
Good For The Game... But Referee's
Co-operation Needed
By TOM FINNEY
(Of Preston North End And England)
Soccer is a robust, manly game, and those who enjoy playing it, as I do, would not want it to be any different. Those who prefer drawing-room pastimes can find them elsewhero. But we can still be sportsmen without being cissios. That is why I draw attention this week to a timely reminder footballers have received from the Players' Union about the importance of setting a good example on the field.
It is not that there is much really dirty play, just that some of us need to remember that the public do not always interpret certain, perhaps thoughtless, actions as over-keenness on behalf of one's side.
I think I can safely say that practically all players are in foot- ball in the first place because they love the game. They enjoyed playing it as lads and I know many a player with years of service behind him who looks forward to his Saturday afternoon more than anything else.
You hear of the odd man gel- It is to combat such criticism idea is to return it to the op- ting n reputation for being that the Pingers" Union have ponent waiting to inke the tough, but I think even the old-asked members to do all they throw-in, And he is expected timers would admit the game is ran to improve the conduct of to give you time to return to elvaner nowadays, There were the game and raise its standard. your position. some real "cloggers" at one time,

Knowing The Laws
Ten there's the question of the Laws. We ought to know them backwards, but you can get a bit rusty. So we're advised in swol them up and cave those arguments with the referee. Nothing wrong with that. I dare say a few of us could be caught napping on some of the finer points.
Next and Mr Publie will be mightily pleased about this-the players are asked to leave it to the skipper when a ruling is questioned the ref appears
to have missed 11 lingsman's signal and NOT crowd round him all talking at once,
Apart from this being more dignified and respectful, and likely to appeal more tu the crowd, there's a better chance, I should say, of getting fak hearing.
Lastly,
when the ball goes cut, we are requested always to take the throw from the right spot, This may seem to be something and nothing, but you'd be surprised how it geta the crowd's goat to see underhand
little tricks like this practised,
Minority Thoughtless
You can call it gamesmanship or what you like, but spectators ns a body don't ilke seeing things that give a teata a mean advant- age. There's a good deal of thoughtlessness-by the minority -in all this, and it doesn't do football any good,
It's for the good of the game that there should be a change for the better in this direction, But now let me say it needs two to make a bargain--the player and the referee.
The fetal in command, after all, is the deciding factor.
Ho has a great bearing on whether these ideas of gentlemanly con- duct could be a success. Without Els understanding and helpħal co-operation they could be a farce.
Referee's
· Co-operation L Give us the co-operation of referves and theso Instructions could be carried out to the bene- nt of the game. He has the powers to decido what is un- gentlemanly conduct, We don't want sportsmanship to get mix- ed up with gederosity. All that is needed is for reforces to make It clear that no one will bo allowed to talos unfair advantage of anything done to improve the conduct of the game..
I would like to close on a per- sonal note by wishing my old team-mate Tommy Docherty the best of luck with Arsenal, his now club, His-transfer from Preston is the biggest of the new season and I expect hina to re- vive the Gunners much as Joo Mercar did a few years ago.
