IT COULD HAVE

BEEN SKIPPER MILLER v. MCC.

One of the outstanding por

sonalities in the Pross box during the forthcoming MCC visit to Australia will bo Kolth Miller.

But for the cauilous attitude of Australia's selectors Miller would probably have been play- ing against England.

was generally believed that Inn Jolteon get the job of lead- ing the Australians In England Jant your partly for diplomatic". Trosas.

In his book "Sport for The Milling" (Stanley Poul: 105.) Jim Stenner says that this choice played a part la Miller's decision to quit cricket.

DISAPPOINTED

"Not that Keith complained," writes Stenner, “or would adni | that he was disappointed even to his clonest friends.... 1 could sense that Miller felt he should have been invited to feud Australia and that omission played its part in his decision to quit the game....

"Had he been captain, it's all Keith's nature to have held on to have a crack nt regaining the Ashes during the fOTH- coming visit of MCC to Australia."

FOOTBALL SEASON OPENS

WITH A TUG-OF-WAR

Football Association And Football League At Ends, Manchester United In Middle

By ARCHIE QUICK

The new football season looks like being heralded in with open warfare between the Football Association and the Football League, with Man- chester United in the middle of the tug-of-war,

AR the bother is over the European Union's decision to invite Unitext to play in the -Europein-Cup competition, "for sentimental reasons, although Wolverhampton Wanderers will be ofelul representatives of England as League Champions. United, it will be remembered, had the heart cut out of their team in the Munich alr crust: when they went returning vic- torlous from Cup tie in Bel- grade.

Trial Of Strength

The Old Trafford eluს accepted the Union's Invitation, the Lengue banned them, the club appealed to the Association and the FA upheld that appeal. I shall always remember the looks on the faces of League Chairman Joe Richards and Secretary Alun Hardaker when they left the FA Lancaster Gate headquarters after the day had gone agalust them

now deve-

The situation hos loped into a trial of strength be tween the two bodies, and Unit- ed are being made an excuse. Strangely, many executives sit on both Councils, but the battle is, I think, between the adminis- trators. In other words, it is Sir! Stanley Rous

Mr Harduker.

Versus

At Brst, the League's bon looked petty, but, while they had bucked their decision by saying that United must rebuild before thinking of added com- mitments, the whole basis of the struggle is that it is a show- down emphasising the League's determination to strengthen its grip on senior professional foot- ball

FA Must Give Way

There is bound to be a fight, By backing United and reversing the League's order, the FA are In direct opposition to Me' Har- daker's and his Councillors' wishes, yet, when it omes to the point, the FA must give way, The League has all the bargain- ing power because they control the clubs. And, from their at- titude can be drawn only dad conclusion-the League bosses are spoiling for a tussle and welcome any excuse for having

It

may

The Leanie, of course, try to ban United by referring `to samo obscure clause in thro FA's own rules, or they could call an emergency meeting of thair clube and rush through a now rule. That is within their power. But it does not seem that they want the easy way out, Me Harkaleer is a coruparatively now and vigorous football administrator, and in his short time or Inguo Secretary he -hón modo it only too clear that him organisation and mot tư TA is the boss of senior prufendorini football.
