memories of my recent travels within the New China, Perhaps these impressions are the more vivid by contrast with those seemingly happy-go-lucky lands of South-East Asia, ablaze with their peacock plumes of colour, through which my route of entry lay, and with my return journey by way of a gay, Westernised Tokyo and a United States that showed no surface changes but was in a pondering and reflective mood unknown in my many visits since 1943.
