OUTDOOR SPORTS CHAMPIONSHIP PRACTICALLY DECIDED

FESTIVAL WORTH TRYING AGAIN

The first ever Outdoor Sports Festival organised by the Hongkong Amateur Sports Federation and Olympic Council at the Hongkong Stadium proved quite an attractive affair if it did not attract as many people as one would have hoped to see present, Six different sports athletics, cycling, gymnastics, hockey, miniature football and softball-were pre- sentexi. Most appreciated, it would appear, was the i gymnastics display by the Army. Physical Training: Corps.

Not so much because it was, Leiter than anything similar in any other part of the world as for the fact that I was very much of a novelty to Hong- kong.

It seemed to me that good

match between the Combined Services and Cum- Lined Civillans, which the latter won, 4-1.

The miniature softball match, in which many of the Colony'? leading players in this sport were engagert, also brought forth much applause,

Surprising

One very surprising feature of the track events was that the participants, with the exception of Archie Lin, did not turn f faster times than they have done at Caroline Hill earlier the season.

This was most surprising as all the participating athletes are in much better condition than they were at the last HKAAA Open Meeting Caroline HU Stadium last December,

May Be Improved

Disappointing though the Festival was from the point of view of lack of attendance, think

that it should be tried again.

There Is considerable for rour

improvement in s presentation,

101

To begin with, it dragged over a long period and, particularly softball and hockey the matches, only a small section of the whole feld was occupied.

Some other form of sport could have been carried on in another section of the fleld, The argument is brought forth by some 13t alt concentration should be on one item, but

33 Fielding Errors Hurricanes Win Ladies' League Game

By "TIME OUT"

The Ladies' League championship was practically decided yesterday when in an entertaining softball game at King's Park Onofre Souza's red-shirted Hurricanos, behind the four- hit pitching of Evelyn Alonco and the fielding and batting of Myra Cruz, edged out the South China team by 9 runs to 7. The close score, however, belied the standard of play as a total of 33 fielding errors was registered, 18 by the losers and 15 by the winners.

Almost History

The sprinkling of fans at King'a Park must have left immediately alter the Comets end War Eagles contest with a feeling of satisfaction. This Junior game almost saw local softball history made os John Goodnir of the Comets just missed his second no-hitter of the

schlevement season, an never recorded before,

The Eagles left two runners siranded in the first inning and falled to scOOD.

John Bryant opened the scoring for the Cometa when he came home on an infield miscue. Tony Djeng got nabbed at the plate when he rttempted to sncuk past Eagles' catcher Owen for the second out afcir Tommy Chadd had rapped a drive straight to pitcher

line

Latt

Michael Hussain's batting average took a sharp dive when in his first trip to the plate ne couldn't produen a hlt. In fact he went zeru four and must now be considered an "also tan" for the batting title.

The recond frame got under way with the Comets leading -0. The Eagles' rat two bot ters were out on easy pops and Kew looked all set to store from bird on two successive errors, but Goodnir rose the occasion and whiffed his opposite num- ber Lau on a fast third strike. The Comets rung up Tu number two in the bottom of the second when shortstop Lam unted safely to advance Kot- wall in second base and then Goodnir rammed Lau's slow bo'l to centre-field for Kotwall to come home standing up.

Lam and Goodair were left stranded on the sacks as Eagles' pitcher Lau took a breather and then got the next three batters on a fan-out and two lazy flies to the infield.

It was still a no-bit Kame after the top of the third as Goodalr forced the Eagles to lay the ball on the ground Talght to the waiting glove of Comels shortstop Lam,

Kotwall's filt past the hol corner drove in Chadd ahead of him from second, then with two men on the Eagles' rightflekicr

catch Kew made a good

of Osman's long drive to end the taning and the scoreboard noW rend Comets 3, War Eagles 0.

Safely Parked

K K. Wong worked Goodair for a walk and when the latter faltered by issuing another tree ticket to first Wong was rafely parked at the keystone. A very good scoring chance was, thrown away when Wong then foolish- ly tried to make third as Good- air turned his back because the bali was waiting for him in the mitt of hoi-comer guardian: Kotwall.

A flelder's choice and two walks later Wu hit home plate for the Eagles' first ́run on nary hit. The Comels took full advantage of some atrocious de- fotalve play by the losers to scure another run and it was Bow 4-1.
