HK's White Russian Refugees Advice To
US Church Body
Advances
Funds To The UN
New York, Jan. 17. Protestant and Eastern Orthodox churches in the United States have advanced US$100,000 to the United Nations for the resettlement of some anti- Communist Russians reaching Hong- kong from China, it was announced today.
The churches, working through the Church World Service an agency for global relief for refugees and disaster victims-on behalf of 35 United States church bodies have advanced the money to the U.N. High Commissioner for refugees, Mr Augustus Lindt, to help in transporting the refugees to new homes. Dr R. Norris Wilson, executive director of Church
World Service, gave a cheque for the full amount to Mr Andrew Cordier, executive assistant to the Secretary-General, Mr Dag Hammarskjold.
Dr Wilson told correspondents afterwards that the US$100,000 would permit the resettlement of only 300 refugees. Both Australia and Brazil had offered the accommodation for some refugees, he said.
