Sir Edmund Hillary ran into almost im- passable deep snows today just 100 miles short of victory in his race to the South Pole.

Reports reaching here from Scott Base, the depot from which the Everest conqueror and his team set out last month on their dash to the Pole, said deep snow was halting their half track vehicles--and petrol was running low.
