Cut These Friendlies A

Says STANLEY. MATTHEWS

I think the Football League Gates, are gelling, poor-only

are right in trying to ent14,000 down on trips abroad by English clubs.

There have been top many of them lately and you can expect a closer watch In the future.

It has always puzzled me why mory of these games-on Sun- days have been allowed in the past.

Why should the League allow clubs to play Sunday games on the Continent but ban Sunday play in England? It is not consistent.

I hope we never adopt in England the Continental practice of big games on Sundays,

Off The Rails While they are thinking of cutting down trips abroad, the League should also pay attention to the increase in floodill games, Are we not going off the rally in

this mad scramble to get in as much football es we can through the week?

I think the lights are a wonderful innovation. When they were first switched on crowds rushed through the turn atles. It became a goldmine.

But the gold is running out the novelty is wearing off.

Crowd-Pullers

Give me the lights every time for mid-wock League and Cup games. They will still draw the crowds, just like any big game.

The lights can also be useful for delaying the Saturday kick- off to three o'clock, so that more fans can get to the game.

But, as matry clubs are find- ing out, they must produce the goods to get the crowds.

Usc lights with discretion, otherwise the bored crowds will put those are lights right out.

He Will Live Down That Tag Of "Another Stanley Matthews"

Says TOM FINNEY

For years soccer fans have been saying that there will never be

another Stanley Matthews.

They are right. But I'm happy to say that English football has now produced the nearest thing to Stanley Matthews we are over likely to see-Bryan Douglas of Blackburn.`

I think Bryan is good enough to live down the unwanted tag of "a second Matthews." He will, I predict, make his own way as "Bryan Douglas the First of Blackburn."

I know how Bryan must feel when the sportswriters dub him another Matthews. Immediately after the war I was faced with the same sort of publicity, despite the fact that Stan and I are completely different in style.

I had heard a lot about Bryan ; ed this trick from his old days Douglas because Blackburn is as an aside forward. Douglas very close to Preston. Roger Byrne, of Man- chester United and England, and his teammate, Jackle Blanch- flower, have also tried this method.

Frank O'Farrell, Preston wing- half, has played at times with- out pads; and Don Revie, the Sunderland and England ́stor, has also said that he might try the idea.

I think it is a great thing for football that we can English produce another ball-playing right winger who, without being Matthews, is still in the Mat thews style.

A big talking point in soccer these days is: should shinguards be worn or are they unnecessary?

Many players now feel that they should, like the Continental footballers, shed shinguards and ap lighten their weight.

Many players get knocks on the shins in practice matches where one does not normolly wear pads. These are pure ac- cidents, and yet a player con get a really nasty knock,

The modern pads weigh no more than two to three ounces, so I don't see how they can slow down a player very much once he has got used to wearing them.
