As Duncan Edwards lay in bed with 'flu on October 1, 1957, he might well have thought this was a fine way to celebrate
a 21st birthday. He might also, though I doubt it, have consoled himself with the thought that he had done pretty well in the soccer world to date.

His record is one which has never been equalled in the whole history of the game and which almost certainly will never ba surpassed.
At 18 years, 183 days old, he became the youngest player ever to wear an England international shirt, when he trotted out at Wembley against Scotland in April, 1955, to become one of the stars in that record- breaking 7-2 victory.
That was the start of an almost unbroken run of international caps which have made him an automatic first choice for England at left half, and one of the cornerstones of our. World Cup hopes.
