San Marino:

The End May Be Near

San Marino, Oct. 8. The Communist-dominated government of this "post- age stamp" republic" ap- peared tonight to be on the point of capitulation as one of the Communist Party's top lenders quit the boleaguered territory and called on his former followers to abandon their "uselcap and absurd re- Blatance,"

Signor Egidio Betinardi, the Ban Marino Communist Party's chief labour organiser, sped across the frontier into Italy today in his midzot zroy motorcar with his wife and daughter.

An appeal to his fellow citizens ha declared "this upc- less and absurd resistance by an extremist group might from one moment to another lead to a point of no return.

No Violenco

No violence was expected. I ___was_thought ilsely that the

Communists and Socialists would accept a "compropatie"" that would in effect cancel their coup d'etat of Septem- ber 1 when they suddenly dissolved parliament and called new clections for next month.

Meanwhile, # self-appointed mediator Signor Oliviera Capelli, San Marinola chicf tax collector, plied busiły throughout the day between the iron foundry and the capital, carrying compromise proposals.

Last point at issue tonight was reported to be an attempt by the Communiste and Socialista to persuade the anti-Com munist Government to agree to Carly elections,
