The appeal for funds to build the Sydney Opera House was launched at a public mooting in the Town Hall last week amid scones of onthusiasm the like of which has not been seen here since early war days.
£235,000 was promised or donated within an hour. Hundreds of people waving bank notes, swarmed around clerks taking donations, while others formed queues to borrow pens to write cheques.
The crowd of 2,500 which packed the Hall could only be described as "highly enthúslas- tic."
As Lord Mayor Alderman Jensen read the list of initial contributors sedate gentlemen mild-mannered ladies stamped their feet, cheered and clapped.
