Lucky Escape
The main Ma On Shan mine, out of operation for 21 days because of rain and landslide damage, is expected to go back into operation today.
The mines which are operated by the Mutual Trust Company, suffered a loss of $500,000 because of damage.
The company's main mine, No. 240 (so named, because the mine is altuated 240 metres above sea level) was thrown out of operation for 21 days. Only the exit has been cleared but min- ing and tunnelling engineers inspected the mine and gave the green light to begin opera- tions again today.
Shoulder-high
It is estimated it will take al least two months for produc-
tion to return to normal, that is at the rate of 650 tons of crude ore day.
It all happened on the night of May 21 when the miners, Anishing their shift, found that their exit was blocked by 3,000 tons of earth and rocks,
They discovered on open space of about two feet at the top of the cement concrete mouth of the exit tunnel, but they dared not climb through because mura earth and rocks were being brought down by the heavy rain.
The 30 men retreated hoping to make their escapa through the entry to the funnel. But they discovered that they had to wade
through swift running water shoulder-high.
Eventually, üs heavy rain continued to fall, a landslide brought down about 7,000 tons of earth and completely blocked the extry to the 240 tunnel, piling about 60 feet high against the slope.
Their only was to climb.
