The major work of the even- ing was Schubert's sixth sym- phony, less well-known thary some of his others. This is supremely romantle work, gay and emotional by turns, typical of Schaber in that he loved some passages so much that he repeated them again and again was surely one of the most "pring" composers in his approach to music.

The orchenino gave a quite adequate performance, with a pler zully lyrical interpretation. of the slow movement, though owing to the symphony's con- siderable length, there · were times when vorldly was lacking. The third movement of this symphony is very reminiscent of the thing movement of Beeth- oven's free symphony, and in fact it is a demonstration of how much Schubert Jonrued from Beethoven.
