New Evidence In

Appeal Case

Further legal submissions on whether addi- tional evidence should be called in an appeal case were given before the Full Court this morning.

The question arose out of an application by Counsel for the appellants to call evidence from a man who was described as not having been available at the hearing of a civil action.

Lee had entered a plea that he has been previously acquitted on a charge for the same offence with which he was now charged, and the Crown, represented by Mr Stuart Collier, Crown Counsel, this morning admitted the plea.

The case came before Mr Justico A. D. Scholes yesterday and was adjourn- ed to this morning to enable Counsel for the Defence to produce the Judges' notes recording the verdicts and of notes taken during committal proceedings.

THEFTS FROM CARS ARE ON THE INCREASE

Mr K. A. Bidmoad, Deputy Com- missioner of Police, this morning stressed the importance of taking all belongings out of unattended cars.

"Unquestionably there are a lot of dupli- cate keys about," he said.

The China Mail confirmed from Mr Bidmead this morning that there has been an increase over the last month of theft from cars not only of articles left in them, but of car accessories like head-lamps, wind- screen wipers, hub caps and even radiator grills.

Windscreen wipers were stolen from eight cars parked in Macdonnell Road last night, according to the Police this morning,

POLICE WATCH

There have been special Police assigned to watch, as far as possible, main car parks and the Police have been trying to trace the outlet for these stolen goods, according to Mr Bidmead.

"We are doing everything we can, but it is very difficult because the car parks are so scattered," he said.

The Hongkong Automobile Association also have their men watching at the main car parks, an official said this morning.

Insurance companies report that slashed tyres are becoming an increasingly popular claim.

RECOVERABLE

The insurance manager of a large firm said "Half our claims are from parked ears with slashed tyres or dents and other damage and bits and pieces stolen."

He said that thefts of car-parts were re- coverable under a comprehensive insurance.
