Washington, June 2. Sen. Allen J. Ellender called on the Eisenhower Administration today to make a "thorough study” of its ban on US trade with Communist China.
He said Administration officials ́"might look into the feasibility" of per- mitting American com- panics to sell non-strategic goods to the Chinese. Com- munists. He said he also "would not be adverse", to permitting Japan to engage in such trade with China.
The Louisiann Democrat made his suggestions in com- menting that he recognises the reasons behind Great Britain's decisión last werk to relax its restriction on trade with Cum- munist China.
UK Decision
In view of the British deci- sion, he said, "It strikes ine But a thorough study should be made by us into the whole question.
Ellender also denounced as "short-sighted" the Adminila- tration ban on travel by American newsmen to Com- munisi China He said stelt travel would enable Ameri- cans to know more about the Chinese and the Chinese more about Amtrimans.
Họ recalled that last year he made a round-the-world trip te the Soviet Union and other countries, not including China. "My hope is that more Ameri- cans would go to Russia and to China to find out what
makes these people tick," he said on a television programme.
