Mr Reginald Maudling, the Paymaster General, today replied to American criticism at a Tokyo conference of the British nuclear reactor.
He said the best answer was for Britain to show what she had achieved -"and the critics have not.”
Mr Maudling was answering questions in the House of Commons about an address to the conference by Mr Kenneth Davis, Director of the Reactor Development Division of the United States Atomic Energy Commission.
A Labour member, Mr George Chetwynd, asked whether the Prime Minister knew of the "defects in the British type of reactor which have been criticised at the Tokyo Atomic Energy Conference in view of the effect of such criticism on potential customers."
Mr Maudling replied: "I have received reports of remarks made about the Calder Hall type of reactor at a conference in Tokyo organised jointly by the American and Japanese Atomic Energy Forum which are organisa- tions of industrial firms concerned with atomic energy."
