SIXPENNY RINGER

By HENRY

LONGHURST

London.

While there are few aspects of the game of golf as played by our friends in the United States in which 1 will yield it to be superior to our own--always excepting their apparently inexhaustible supply of ruthlessly efficient players there is one item of day-to-day play. from which they derive much innocent amusement, and which we nowadays seem to mias altogether. This is what they call the club "Ringer" competition—or, as we should term it, "eclectic."

In most American clube you will find a big score-sheet with names of the entrants, each fol- one per lowed by 18 squares. hole. The name "Ringer" come, from the fact that, as they fin the squares one by one, with a par Agure or better, they put a ring round the figure,

The competition runs for, Buy. three months. and the (Nom)- petitors enter for it, either auto- matically through an overall fee, or by dropping something in the box cach time they play.

ENLIVENED

This adds greatly to the fun of day-to-day golf. The drearlent Sourball or the wretchedesi de- feat in a single may bc en- Avened by a freak three at long hole, the occasional two, or even a one at a ohort hole, fo put da "Ringer."

As time goes on, the humblest of handicap players, deducting their allotted strokes, of course, poo their totals creepingg down towards the low sixties.

Q

In America any adjustment on the pooro-sheet is substantialed by a duly signed score-card, this being no particular trouble automatically since everybody keeps his score (hence the five- hour fourball of accursed memory), and, indeed, in some clubs the caddie actually kets the sack if he does not produce a card of his employer's stOTE at the end.

In England, where players are, on the whole, allergic to score- carda and secretaries even more allergic to taking on any extra work in connection therewith we could run it more simply un an "honour" basis.

Those who had forgotten put their sixpence in the box betare going out could declare on the first tee that they were
