Malayan Timber For BW Parquet

New Process Used By Federation Factory
More Economical
1
Tucked away out-of-sight behind Chinese distillery in the rapidly developing industrial section of Petaling Jaya in Malaya is a flourishing modern factory which produces terrazzo tilos and parquet flooring.
The factory, which is the enterprise of The China Engineers Ltd, was completed in May last year and has been producing terrazzo tiles since that date. Its products are now being worked in Hongkong.

The BW Parquet process was

This process produces a very much more economical, durable parquet flooring and beautiful than the normi
tongued and grooved procERS.
For its production In Malays local timbers, mainly kempas and keruing, have been found to be extremely suluble. Hitherto most of the parquet flooring in Malaya has been made from ex- pensive imported teak

The Swiss made precision cutting machine which cuts and planes the Wood for BW Parquet. Ducting leading from top of machine sucks off unwanted sawdust,
the timber after it has been laid. The timber drying kiln which China Engineers have built in their factory has accommodation for about 7,000 square feet of timber.
"The kiln is thermostatloully controlled 'to ensure that tho wood comes out in first class con- dition and dried to the exact £9 TC- molature content that quired.
The timber is then sent to u high-precision heavy-duty cutter which cuts the wood into small squares. These
then squares pass through another part of the same machine and are planed on both sides.
ASSEMBLY
After planing the squares are put in revolving cutters which cut them up into oblong pieces each five inches long by one inch wida.
This machine is tested several times during the day to ensure that the maximum accuracy is obtained all the time.

When the small blocks wood emerES from the cutter they are carried away on a con- veyor belt and dropped into a silo.
dozen
Around the dlo a operatoru are at work assembling the small pieceH of wood into Jigs in parquet designs.
Each・・ square of parquet measures approximately 2% feet square and is; papered together
In a similar process used in the assembly of inusaic tiles,
The squares are then trans- ported to the Inspection bench where they are inspected for moisture content and symmetry, after which they are packed into cartons to awali dispatch,
Each carton contains about 35 square feet of flooring.
BW Parquet is not only used In Malaya and Singapore but has already been exported over- sena to Hongkong und North
Homeo.
As the moisture content re- quired in these areas differs it is necessary to kiln-dry the timber to various percentage of moisture,
LAYING
For instance when the flouring in Intouded for use in an air conditioned building the mois- ture content has to be reduced to 12 per cent. In non-air con- ditioned buildings the right mois- lure content is as much as 15 to 16 per cent.
BW Parquet can be luid ex- tremely quickly causing very Ile inconvenience to the con- which tractors or householder,

is a great advantage over the grooved normal tongued and flooring.
Trained layers can lay between 408 14 500 square feet per day When China Engineers Install and lay the flooring themselves their quotation includes the cost of materials, laying, sanding and polishing. The average cost works out at about $1.20 per square foot of laid Booring.
