Jerusalem, Mar. 26. The map of the Holy Land will be changed next summer with the disappearance of Lake Huleh after an existence of 200,000 years.

Even now, only a temporary artificial dam keeps the ancient lake in being. the great Africa. In the era, volcanic Java anaking eruptions scross the valley bed and creat- cd dam behind which the waters of the Jordan ruse form the lake and swamps.

To "uncork" the bottleneck at the southern tip of Lake Hulch. the Joertan river bed had to be enlarged and deepened, Diamond drills were used to blast the basalt rocks. Altogether nearly 750,000 tons of earth and stone wore

removed at this point alone.

To prevent the escape of the 25,000,000 cubic metres of water, contained in the lake sum-

mer, before the engineers were ready for it, the temporary dam of sheet pile backed up by bulwark of carlh and stones had to be erected.

When it is removed, one day in the summer of 1957, the water will run out of the lake as from a barrel whose lap has been turned. The engineers estimate that it will Lake from four to six weeks, however, before the lake completely drained.

The next phase in the work was to dig a conduit to replace the ancient Jordan river bed in the region. This, and auxillary drainage canals were excavated by floating dredgers through the heart of the marshes and the lekce,

Canadian Defence Spending

Ottawa, Mar. 26. Immigrants arriving in Canada find a peaceful country untouched by two world wars, and often lightly conclude that here they are far reshoved from thoughts of war,

Yet spending on national defence constitutes by far the largest single item in the national budget, taking nearly 37 cents out of every dollar spont by the Federal Government,

In a white paper presented to Parliament before the 1957 budget, Mr Waller Harris, the Finance Minister, gave

outlay for these was 390 of all expenditure in 1950, dropping

largely unaware of the Impact which spending for defence hos had on

Canada, particularly since the outbreak of the Koitan war. Mr Paul Hellyer, Parlamentary, assistant to the Minister of National Defence, gave some striking figures in March. At the peak of the post-Korcan defence effort, in cent of the 1032-53, 45 per federal budget went for defence spending, he said.
