RACING GAVE THEM RICHES

THE CHINA_MAIL, FRIDAY, MARCH 8, 1957.

Fancied For The Lincoln

The Owner Who Hid In The Hayloft To Avoid Creditors

By PERCY RUDD

Of all the curious characters who have fitted across the pages of racing history none was odder than Thomas Parr. Originally an Itinerant hawker of ten in the villages of Devon and Cornwall, he became a highly successful trainer of race- horses at Fyfield, Wantage, on the edge of the Berkshire Downs.

Parr was a positive genius in divining and developing the possibilities of horses. He got hold of several really good ones on the cheap and did such wonders with them that he won Lao St Legers, two Ascot Gold Cups, the Cambridgeshire in two successive seasons and the Cesarewitch. Yet he never had any money.

The Hongkong Jockey Club's Annual Race Meeting will be brought to a conclusion tomorrow and a record gathering of racing fans is expected.
