Finishing Sixth At Melbourne Will Be A Great Performance

Says HAROLD ABRAHAMS

In less than three weeks' time the nations of the world will meet at interval of Melbourne for the 16th Olympic Games. Recently I met, after an more than 30 years, Mr Wilfred Kent Hughes, Chairman of the Organising Com mittee,

Kent was a Rhoades scholar at Oxford just after World War I, in which he fought with distinction. He represented Oxford against Cambridge at running and Incrosse; Australia at the 1920 Olympics; and he won a British championship In the 440 Yurds Hurdles.

THE GREATEST VOTE OF CONFIDENCE EVER GIVEN A WATCH

663 PIECES OF OMEGA TIMING EQUIPMENT

LEAVE FOR MELBOURNE OLYMPIC GAMES

Forty-two hermetically sealed crates weighing over 5000 lbs..and containing 663 stopwatches and other timing devices recently left the Omega factory at Bienne, Switzerland, for the Olympic stadium in Melbourne, Australia. Insured for a million Swiss francs, the shipment is due in Melbourne during October.

The equipment ranges from the conventional stopwatch to the Racend Omega Timer, a complex electronic-optical device costing 30'000 Swiss francs. Waiting in Australia to inspect the instruments as soon as they are unloaded are the eight engineers and technicians of the Omega Timekeping Squad. The group, which received special training at the Omega factory, went to Australia to assure expert installation, maintenance and operation of the timing equipment. As soon as the Olympic Games open, the Omega Squad will be joined by Australian timekeepers who were likewise trained by Omega in Switzerland. Other timekeepers will be appointed by the various international sports federations but will be limited to operating stopwatches. Every member of the eight-men Omega group in Melbourne has been inti- mately associated with high-precision timekeeping for several years and had extensive Olympic experience. For some of the members, in fact, Melbourne is the sixth Olympic city. During the past years these men have traveled thousands of miles to all parts of the world, timing the most important international sports meets. And if they have acquitted them- selves with honor, it is because they have the qualifications for Olympic timekeeping, namely presence of mind, a gift for concentration and, most important, the ability to go about their job calmly in the midst of the tempestuous excitement generated by a hotly contested sports event. Omega timing instruments, like the men who install and use them, have given ample proof of their ability to perform accurately and reliably. For two months prior to their departure for Australia, the instruments went through a series of daily tests at the Omega laboratories. Final, especially strict precision tests were run at the Neuchatel Observatory, where each instrument was certified as conforming to the timekeeping standards set up by the international sports federations.

At Melbourne, as at all Olympic Games of the past 25 years, Omega contributes its precision instruments and its staff of highly trained experts as a public service. The cost of sending timekeepers and their instruments to Australia and back to Switzerland is also borne by Omega.
