Frank Lloyd Wright's Christmas Tree Idea

Spring Green,

The well-known American architect, Frank Lloyd Wright, disclosed details of a pro- pored mile-high skyscraper, which would "rise like a rapier in the sky" above Chicago's lakefront,

"It would be the eighth wonder of the world," he said. "But it would be as simple as ABC."

The controversial, 87-year-old architect was interviewed at Taliesin, bis rambling, weather- beaten home on a wooded hill in the Wisconsin countryside.

Mr Wright said his skyscraper would be bullt of stainless steel and glass. Elevators would have their own individual motora powered by nuclear energy. They would rise on cogged tracks at a mile a minute. The building would be a cantilever structure with a "Taproot" foundation extending 1,000 feet The floors would extend beneath the surface. outward from a central steel and concrete core, like limbs from a tree trunk.

Thus, Mr Wright said, the building would be extremely light in weight and low in cust, for there would be no ponderous, rectangular steel skeleton.

WHEN the inhabitants of Halse Town, St Ives., Cornwall came into Will Dunn's shop to buy their groceries one morning, they saw the death knell of their village written in the headlines of the newspapers on the shop counter.

The Medical Officer had 'condemned Halse Town outright, Almost without exception, he had said in his report to St Ives Town Council, the houses of Halse Town were unfit for human habitation, for apart from a few that could be made habitable for the benefit of old- age pensioners who wished to live out their lives in the village, they ought to be demolished and the people housed elsewhere.
